I did the SSI Solo divers course. To be frank, I did this just for the insurance (I am now within my certification when diving solo). Kit-wise, you need to be bullet-proof. A pony is the bare minimum. Any depth whatsoever and you need to think twinset. And so it goes on. Going deeper? Think trimix. I guess your photos will also improve with the clearer head.

Of course, the other option is solo with other divers nearby. This has benefits in that you have the freedom and also an increased chance of assistance if necessary.

For me, solo is an option and not to be used all the time. The feeling of freedom is quite fantastic, and you can do what you want, when you want. As someone who has buddied a photographer and frozen because of it, solo has even more appeal!
