Your baggage allowance is what usually dictates whether you take it or not

Always. I don't think you can under estimate the value of reviewing the shots at the end of the day. This allows you to see any mistakes that you are making as well as giving you the option of attempting to retake those shots that clearly have potential but aren't quite right.

I used to take a Flashtrax which has a screen and allows you to backup 20Gb. I found that it wasn't anywhere near as good as a laptop.

I know the hand luggage thing is an issue. Some airports will now allow to take a laptop bag as well as your hand luggage. Going out to Marsa recently Maria and I had 25kg of hand luggage that consisted purely of camera equipment and a laptop (and that was leaving our topside lens at home). Good job they didn't weight it. As a contigancy I wore my biggest coat with the most pockets so that I could always "redistribute" lens, cameras, strobes, etc into my pockets if need be. You can buy photographers waistcoats with pockets galore. I read recently of someone who claimed to have filled it with 27kg of camera equipment when boarding a flight.

I'm going to wadi Lahami (just south of marsa alam) in april. The luggage weight is 5 kg. My camera weighs that (and that is mostly stuff that needs to go under water as well). My ancient laptop weighs 3 kg so I'll never be able to take that and have to use a portable HD with cardreader.

I bought a vest meanwhile, and can easily fit all 5 normal kg in it. But it doesnt look very inconspicious.

But then even with only the housing and strobes, the bag is heavier then 5 kg. I'm afraid is has to go in the checked luggage...
Hope somebody will borrow me a laptop....

..
As you are going to Wadi Lahami I take it that you are going with Oonas and flying with Thomson. The Oonas site says that you are limited to 5kg but the Thomson site says that you are allowed 10kg of hand luggage. Maria and I took 25kg between us (10&15) without any problem at all. We were going to Marsa Shagra. We are going back next month and we'll certainly take the same again.

I love taking my laptop as part of my holiday fun is reviewing the days pictures. I take a small hard suitcase ( like the stewardesses have) for my hand luggage containing my cameras and lap top and stuff.

I took mine to Galapagos and I was really glad i did
