Now what?

Well I now have a 60mm macro to go with my D70. But i'm not going to wait until i can get it wet to start familiarizing myself with the camera and controls. But what to do.

Has anyone got any simple things I can try to get used to how the camera acts

Find a butterfly farm. It will teach you most of what you need to know, apart from low light focus.

Guess where I'm going Saturday? Managed to persuade the kids a day at the butterflies would be fun!

LOL I won't have to convince anyone, where you going. I assume you'll be using the 105 though?

Going to the Rutland Water Butterfly Farm. Will play around with the 105, but also planning to do a full spherical panorama of the kids in the butterfly farm (depending on how busy it is and patient they are). I need to find out why my 105 isn't as sharp as the 50 underwater. I could do this on a toy, but fancy the idea of "real" macro.

Not sure if it's relevant to what you're seeing but you'll get less depth of field with the 105, not that you get a lot with the 50 shooting macro.

That's not the issue I think. Either I'm failing to hold the whole thing steady once it's focused or the port is scratched; I had to polish the inside of the Ikelite port to remove some scratches that were visible on my first trip to St Abbs. I got some really good compositions with the 105mm, but they just aren't as sharp as the shots from the 50mm. No difference in settings and I tend to try and shoot macro at high f numbers, unless I'm going for a restricted depth of field effect.
