portfolio

Well my entry into the bsoup beginners comp did o.k.

Having checked with j.p, i came a respectible 13th out of 49.
which i think was good as i am only using a compact camera, and i am sure a large amount of the people above me were using slr.

Heres my entry for bsoup beginners comp, for people to have a look and and give some views.

simon.

Simon,
Well done, I'd be well chuffed with 13th. I didn't bother entering as I think the beginners portfolio is very difficult as its an open one and there are a lot of entrants from clear blue waters; so I'll be aiming for some photos to use from my Red Sea trip in January.

Do you know how many votes you got?

Points are 3 for a first place vote, 2 for a second and 1 for a third. So be very pleased that 2 people thought yours was the best!

this is a really interesting thread. Creating a portfolio (largely to show prints to potential customers rather than for competitions at teh moment) is something I've been thinking about recently, but I'm not sure the best way of going about it. Are there any tips I should bear in mind when putting my photos together?

Wish I could make the BSOUP meetings, but it's a bit far from Glasgow!

thanks

zan

Zan,
There's good guidance on the BSoUP website:
UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHY - Six of the best
There are also plenty of portfolios to look through and see what works and what doesn't.

Nice shots Simon - and well done on your placing!

If you want some feedback...

FWIW...I think there are two pics in there that will have moved you down the placings, the b/w shot centre top is different from the others and would probably therefore be seen as not in keeping with the rest if the shots, hence lower marks in a portfolio, and the centre bottom fish is swimming away from the camera, which reduces the impact of the shot. Swap them out and you'd probably score better.
