Re: Green Water Photography - The Basics

I have an Olympus 8080 and they have problems autofocusing in low light. so I fitted an Ikelite PCa modeling light under my DS50 strobe for deep macro shots. The problem I had was I got hot spots from the modeling light. My soluotion was a difuser made from a plastic milk bottle cut to fit the light.

Re: Green Water Photography - The Basics

Here's a tip from me.

In U/W photography it's a truism that you need to get close. In typical temperate waters the need to get close really cannot be stressed enough as especially as the viz is often not so great. So, this means wide angle or close macro unless the viz really is good.

Don't use zoom (especially digital zoom) in place of getting physically closer, the added distance will sap colour and contrast.

If you don't know how close is enough then take a photo and get closer, take another and get closer still repeat until you

a. Can't focus close enough,
b. You hit the wreck
c. The subject is spooked and swims away.

If you need to buy a WA or Macro attachment then do it. The quality of your pictures should drastically improve in terms of colour / contrast.

Re: Green Water Photography - The Basics

Not meaning to blow my own horn or anything, but I've got a rather comprehensive article in issue 32 (pages 39 to 42) of www.uwpmag.com that I believe would be useful for photographers diving in low viz'.

Matt,

If it's relevant and useful then please blow away.

I must have missed that article as I normally download and read UWP mag religiously.

My 2cents

Try taking a few shots in PORTRAIT mode. Most divers starting take 100% Landscape.
Hold camera purposefully STILL while pressing the shutter button.
Take pictures pointing the lens upwards.
Try filling the frame with your subject.
Remember the rule of thirds.
