Stoney Splash-in Shots

Weeeell, as said elsewhere, never dive a Splash in as a threesome with other photographers. Life was a little difficult especially as the conditions were...well, lets just say......poor, and leave it at that.

Well,

here are my best efforts on the day following a little TLC from Photoshop.

I thought I'd made the best of a bad job yesterday but after seeing some of the photos from a few of the other entrants yesterday, I'm not so sure. I still have a long way to go before I'm really happy with what I'm getting. Maybe a D200 upgrade needs to be put onto the back burner until my technique improves. Having said that, it's clear that a little planning goes a long long way - I'll have to work on it.

Tim,
You've missed the point. Tim P and Martin (think was his name) both had D200s, so maybe it's the camera that made the diffence

Some good shots guys dispite the conditions. Tim I love the way you've managed to pick up the gold in the pikes scales, particularly on the second pike pic. Rob I like the single piece of weed shot best - but then thats just me - I do like weeds and stuff....basically stuff that stays still!

Is it me or have you changed the policy to only showing thumbnails?

Jules

Jules,
Mine are on Photobucket with a largest dimension of 640, so shouldn't appear very small.

My larget size is 600 pixels so won't be large.

I'm not posting large files anymore - they take up to much space and take too long to upload.

It's not a site policy thing tho.

Tim

Nice pics, chaps - and sooner or later someone is going to crack and tell us what happened on Saturday?

Anyway, especially liked the second pike, Tim, really sharp, good composition and exposure, really nice, and the single weed is excellent, Rob, dreamy and an excellent example of the coral-reef-against-the-sun shot but with some imagination. It wouldn't surprise me if the weed shot got somewhere, when d'you get the results?

Oh, yes, and itreally is the camera. Forget the D200, that was so six months ago, you need the D300 at least if you want anything even half-decent, though if you're truly committed you'll forget all that semi-amateur rubbish and head direct for the D3.

Of course, you'll still get nowhere if someone enters using a Canon 1DS Mk III, but that's to be expected, it's crystal clear that pictures from Canon cameras are always going to be better than Nikon, not to mention the way the vis dramatically improves when you use Canon.....

Well Saturday went a bit like this. Three photographers diving together in poor vis. We lost each other every 5 minutes or so, but for most of the time were in a small area so easily found each other. Right at the start of dive 2 we entered, Simon and I fired off a test shot and we swam off to plan. Simon saw something and stopped, we didn't notice! Vis was so bad on the 6m shelf. There was also air escaping from Tim's high pressure hose, so Tim and I surfaced. I think this is when Simon swam by. Anyway, we couldn't find him so surfaced and made the call. If it had been anywhere other than Stoney I think the plan would have been stay together as long as we can then if we loose each other, see you back on the boat! The plan was never to go deeper than 6m, so I never actually thought Simon was in trouble. He surfaced once he heard the boat.

I asked one of the marshalls to make the shout. Stoney was packed and it went silent - really spooky. The marshall said to me "hasn't he heard of 1 minute and surface", I said "we're all three photographers", he reply was "typical!"

Lesson learnt,
Rob
