Diving Wales - Area Aberyswyth
Hi, it's me again...
As you maybe already read - i' going to take some english-classes in Wales in August, 3 weeks, from 10th until 28th. If possible i want to to some diving on the weekends. But - i don't know anything about the area around Aberyswyth, would be great if there is a diver here who can show me some places or bases. I bring my own (full) equipment, twinset and mono; drysuit... Greeting from Germany Michael |

I may be able to help on both counts. I would certainly fancy a weekend in Wales in August, although I seem to think that the better diving in Anglesey or Menai Straits (?). Maria and I also tend to take our time travelling up to Scapa and so we may well be up for some diving in St Abbs and/or Loch Carron in the days before. Here's the reason for the may. Maria was made redundant at the end of Feb and is still looking for a new job. Even in London things are not easy. She had an interview for the Court Service last week where there was over 200 applicants for 8 posts. Assuming that she gets a job, things will depend upon her leave entitlement. Some posts have said no leave for 3 months, others 2 days per month for the first year. Hence we cannot commit to almost anything at the moment. We are even meant to be going to Marsa Alam in JUne. Flights are booked for both of us, as is my accommodation and diving. At the moment she cannot even confirm that! As soon as something is confirmed then I'll let you know what I can do about the week before Scapa. Daniel |

Hey Diva! Would be great!
The next dive center i read about is Celtic Diving in Pembrokeshire, which is still about 60mls to go. Didn't find anything around Aberyswyth by now, maybe someone can help... During the week in Scottland i only want one or two days diving, because i also want to to some sightseeing, see the cities, the Highlands, some Castles, maybe a distillery... I hope everything gets well for you Daniel! Let me know. Regards Michael |

I don't know of anything around the Aberystwyth area but I do know Pembrokeshire well. There are loads of dive sites, walls, wrecks, drifts so there is usually a reasonable choice even if conditions aren't so good. August last year was great, even though it hadn't been a brilliant year. Feel free to PM me if you want any more information about a small friendly dive centre!

You are right, there does not seem to be a lot of diving around Aberystwyth.
Well i was never able to find anything about diving in the area on the net. I vaguely remember reading something about a shallow shore dive in the harbour/pier area. And that the wreck of HMS whirlwind is not that far from there... I would try to contact the university diving club there or Cantre'r Gwaelod Divers which also seem to be based round there. British Sub Aqua Club - SCUBA diving from beginner to extreme - join the fun, join the club (There may be some SAA or independent clubs have a google...) You said you will bring all your gear, will that include tanks and a car? If it doesnt i suspect you will be dependent on those guys for transport and a tank, and even if you do bring a car and tank you need fills from their club compressor/members compressor/ or get them to point you to that little unknown fill station... as again the web reveals no obvious sources of air in the area. I can PM you contact details of the BSAC Wales Area coach. He may also be able to give you a few pointers but i was looking at Diving the Whirlwind and from his description I concluded it is a bit of a logistical nightmare if you don't have a portable compressor or a weekends worth of cylinders you can bring along full... |

Hi Steph!
All my gear including Tanks (D12 and Mono), Wheights and car, plus Drysuit and Semidry. As i'm driving alone i have plenty of room in the car... but i won't bring a compressor with me ![]() I try to contact the University Club. On one weekend i want to go to Pembrokeshire, i don't know how much free time i will have. Diving during the week on afternoons would be perfect. I will see. Thanks for your posting. Best wishes Michael |

Hello!
I arrived last Sat here in Aberystwyth and unfortunately i couldn't find any club or center to go dive with... the university club is not activ during the break and i didn't get a reply on my emails to the Cantre'r Gwaelod center. The center Annie directed me to has no space next weekend. Can anybody give me some advice? Or is there a diver from this area here on digigreen? I need some pressure... ![]() I brought my car, so it's no problem to drive a few miles (if possible not more than 70 one way). Sunday (16th) would be great or next weekend saturday or sunday. Regards Michael

Unfortunately for you I'm away/to busy while you are here otherwise I would have invited you round to Anglesey... more like 80-100 miles 1 way...
If you would be prepared to go that far for most likely only 1 dive... possibly shallow shore at that then drop me a PM with your contact details i.e. e-mail and mobile number, and a quick summary of you diving quals, cold (salt) water, low visibillity, current, experience, How long ago and type of most recent dive/cold water dive, type of diving you are interested in. I will pass on the details to some people in the club and divers round Anglesey. You can also contact the Lleyn SAC (http://www.llynscuba.org.uk/ search for Aberdaron on google maps if you don't know where the Lleyn peninsula is) yourself (they will want the same info I just asked for) and ask if they will take you out as a guest... which will save you 10-15 miles as supposed to going to Anglesey. Regards Stephan
