Martin knows far more about underwater photography than your bank manager does.

Trust me, a nice wide-angle lens will make you far happier than a bank manager ever can.

If money is an issue then I would look at the 10.5 or 15. Both can be used without gears and neither require an extension ring. That will save £250 on top of the cost of the lens in the short term. S&S does not show the 10-17 as being compatible with the compact dome port and so you would also need the extra cost of the fisheye dome unless you are happy to lose the sharpness in the corner.

If you fancy trying out wide angle then I'd be happy to join you on a dive and lend you mine.

hmmm... as the question has been raised already, my next purchase is the Tokina 10-17 which is universally talked as the best WA lens. Any suggestions on the best place to purchase? Ebay? others? my company's got an office in HK - get someone to buy it there and ship it for me?

It's worth exploring the Hong Kong option. I saved about £200 on a Nikon 12 - 24mm lens and £100 on the 10.5mm fisheye. The Computer Mall in Wan Chai has some good camera shops and they will do an even better deal for cash.

I also saved around £100 on a Sea & Sea fisheye dome port (from Prodive, also in Wan Chai). They even threw in a free neoprene cover (£35 in the UK)

If you can, get someone to bring it over rather than have hassle with carriage, insurance and such like.....

For mail order a lot of people use Yuzo, www.uwdigitalcamera.com. I gather than you can buy cheaper if you are actually in Japan.

I may well take you up on that offer still wanting to take the camera to the sea, another drive to swanage may be on the cards.

I can't afford to buy just yet and as Tazzie has said I need to get to grips with the macro lens. The only thing is the trp at the end of july is visiting a few wrecks (carnatic giannis d and chrisolua k) so martin suggested getting hold of something if I could.

When are you going away in July?
I am in the Farnes for the first weekend in August. You are welcome to borrow a 15mm and port as long as I can get them back for then.
