Petition to stop cuttlefish fishing in Babbacombe Bay

Every year many cuttlefish are caught when they come in to breed. The practice is depleting the stock of cuttlefish in the area as they are prevented from breeding.

A petition has been started to bring this to the attention of the UK government and UK residents can sign up at

Petition to: ban cuttlefish catching in babbacombe bay breeding ground.

Closing date is 16th March 2008 so don't hang about.

worthy cause but not a UK resident. If they only would wait a couple of weeks: The Sepia's at least the females) will die after reproduction...not straight away, still time to catch them. Who eats cuttlefish anyway, paella ?

Ken, I recognise a few names on that but have you put it on any of the big diving forums, there are only 91 signatures.

I've put it on Wetpixel and circulated it to a few groups I'm a member of. Please post it on any other forums you think would generate a response. 91 is 20 more than when I first saw it saw that's some progress.

I see Rob has put it on YD now and I've found an old thread when the petition was originally set up on handbag net so bumped it back up into the limelight

Done, signed and confirmed.

Anybody know how effective these petitions are? Has anything changed as a result of them?

I signed the one about the U boat on the Wirral. As soon as it finished I got a lovely e-mail from the PM's office saying "thanks...blah, blah, blah.....the PM doesn't bother getting involved in anything interesting....blah, blah, blah"

I'm hoping for a better response this time.

I was wondering that too. I've signed a few of these things, including this one and usually get an email basically saying thanks for your views... but no.
