Anyone any idea what time this begins? They didn't know when I booked and it doesn't say on the website. I've phoned a couple of times and not got a reply and they haven't returned my message.

This was really good. Didn't appreciate the early start, but it was well worth it. Martin Edge is a fantastic communicator.

I am gutted not to have met you Rob, it wasn't until we were driving out of the event I even remembered you were there! *embarrassed*
Martin was excellent, as usual, but John Wallis stole the show for me - he's inspired me to take the camera out on land with some of his amazing shots, I never thought that would happen!

The timing of this was perfect. I went to Martin's seminar on Saturday and then drove to St Abbs on Sunday for two days diving Monday/Tuesday with Mark (markbsac). As I've put on here a few times I've been having problems with lighting wideangles with stray light in the dome and lots of backscatter. So when Martin covered this I sat up and listened. I've read his book a couple of times now and must have read the bit about strobes about 5 times. Yet listening to him just made it sink in. So I tried what he suggested (strobes well back, angled out a lot more than seemed logical, and closer to the housing than I thought). I had very few problems during the WA dives; no stray light, no hot spots, but in some shots there is back-scatter - but this was due to the crap in the water.
I also did some experimenting with strobes well off of the camera, Martin mentioned this as did Alex Mustard at the EMUP meeting. I didn't go full hog and take the strobe totally off, but placed both as far as the dual cord would safely allow and I've got some wonderful effects. This is something I will paractice with more topside then try properly in the water. The one thing that did stroke me about ME was his openess and his admittance that he makes the same mistakes we all do. Top bloke. Rob

Cropping
The whole day was inspirational.
We heard about panoramas, which got me thinking about shapes: I've just redone my three entries for the BSoUP Splash-in PRINT competition, and cropped them (two long and one square) to emphasize the subjects. AND (after Martin Edge's thoughts on what the public like) one's a clown anemonefish... Tim ![]() |
