We heard about panoramas, which got me thinking about shapes: I've just redone my three entries for the BSoUP Splash-in PRINT competition, and cropped them (two long and one square) to emphasize the subjects. AND (after Martin Edge's thoughts on what the public like) one's a clown anemonefish...

The thing about aspect ratios was quite interesting. There is a golden rule that 1.618034 is the most pleasing aspect ratio (the Grand Masters knew this). The old 6 x 4 format is close to this, as is widescreen TV. Yet with the advent of digital, most compacts give us 4:3 (the standard TV format). One thing I noticed when moving from compact to DSLR was the photos looked better, the framing was much nicer. I have my compact set to 6 x 4 as opposed to 4:3 - it looks better.

This website lists most aspect ratios Image Aspect Ratios

I have a really good book on composition. It has a photo in it shot at a standard 4:3 and then has been cropped about 20 different ways to highlight different available frames and aspect ratios. I was thinking of doing something similar to show at EMUP so will post it here too.

Saying that though, I like square images and the old panorama in APS was really good too. Who would also argue with Kubrick and his love of letterbox? As with all rules they are just there to be ignored!
