1 to 1 with Martin Edge

On thursday I spent a day with Martin Edge - just me and ME

I wanted to spend some time with an established pro and get an understanding of my standard of photography and also get some idea of how to improve that standard.

The course was to be held at the Trouville Hotel in the centre of Bournemouth. Martin had booked a large meeting room in which we were to spend the whole morning and then move onto the pool for a session in the afternoon.

The day started with Martin asking about me and my diving and photography history and aims, camera equipment and reasons for the selection of each element and what I wanted to get from the session. We then started reviewing a selection of my photos from the last year, both those that I felt were good and those that I wouldn't ordinarily show. From this Martin was able to quickly get an idea of my style and standard and also the common problems in my photos. We then moved onto a number of excercises and discussions centered around some of the problems and areas I wanted to address. This was all dry but would be supported by the pool sessions later in the afternoon.

A quick lunch was followed by the pool session. The pool itself was only about 5-6m wide but you could barely see one side from the other - perfect conditions for the excercise. In this session I was to select a number of fabric flowers and then photograph them. The aim was to combine a number of learnings from the morning and finish with a selection of 10 photos with good composure and lighting. This sounded easy but was actually rather difficult to get something that would be of the required standard and look great straight from the camera.

Following the pool session we reviewed the photos and then discussed workflow and possible tweaks in PS.

The day lasted from 8:30 to 17:00 and it was a great opportunity to have the undivided attention of a professional photographer. I learnt a lot and now have a much higher level of expectation of my own photos. In fact a number of the photos that I took in Manado which I thought were great suddenly revealed their flaws and I am no longer satisfied with the standard but, importantly, I have been given tips on how to resolve the obvious problems. I now can't wait to get back into the water and try out all the things I've learnt.

Dave,

I learnt a lot that applied specifically to my set-up and current standard. One of the things that was really impressed upon me was how much time and concentration you need to spend before each shot and making sure you really work a subject before moving on but moving on quickly if the subject just isn't working. Another simple one was to get some kind of eye contact if you're photographing beasties - it's surprising how much difference it makes. One of things that will make a big difference to the technical side of my photos is my strobe placement, Martin showed me a placement that is reproducible and should dramatically reduce backscatter - I can't wait to try it out.

Tim

Admire your bravery - don't think I'm up for having a pro look at my pics. Beside which, like your good self, I am clearly more talented than Mr Edge, as well as better looking!

Tim

Are you going to give us some more information on some of the tips you got? Not related to the your specific equipment.

Anything on composition for example? or general rules of thumb?

go on.. share !

Be interested to know the cost of the day you did as well.

Jules, I'll drop in the things I've learnt as I can. As for the costs, I'll PM you.

Cheers,

Tim
