I still don't feel the need to go DSLR, but, I keep seeing what look like good deals for DSLR's around. I was wondering whether to get one to play with above the water, as I don't tend to print them off, it hasn't got to be anything too complicated. I would like to get something that if I bought lenses for I could use on later cameras.

I have seen several Nikon D40's for sale on ebay, including an 18-55 lens for under £300 including postage. Is this worth getting to play with? Should I save a few more quid and buy something better? If I got the D40 would any subsequent lenses fit other Nikon cameras?

To be honest I would be tempted by a good camera at this price, but any more money and I would rather spend it on divign than a camera for above water.

save your money. d40 has limitations. check the specs no auto focus using
Type G or D AF Nikkor
1) AF-S, AF-I: All functions supported, 2) Other type G or D AF Nikkor: All functions
supported except autofocus, 3) PC Micro-Nikkor 85mm f/2.8D: Can only be used in
mode M; all other functions supported except autofocus, 4) Other AF Nikkor*
2/AI-P
Nikkor: All functions supported except autofocus and 3D Color Matrix Metering
II, 5): Non-CPU: Can be used in mode M, but exposure meter does not function;
electronic rangefinder can be used if maximum aperture is f/5.6 or faster
*1. IX Nikkor lenses can not be used
*2. Excluding lenses for F3AF
would appear your thinking of spending money on slr with possible upgrade to underwater use!!

Believe fantasea are bring out housing d40x with port to take 2 types of lense at budget price in dollars around $1200,current d40 housing about $1500 with out port!!.

if not thinking of underwater use ,what about second hand nikon d1x .going for around £300 on ebay and well built reasonable 5.3mp.(more if shot in raw) but what ever you get would say need a 28mm-300mm lense for variety. just to get that bit closer some times.
find my 200mm just short some timesand the 300 sport lens to big.

but what ever camera you buy think about the extras(lenses,batteries,filters,)
