Nikon D70

Hey all,

Was wondering what people thought of the D70. I dont know anything abou Nikons really alwys been a canon man. But there seems to be a few D70 floating around second hand for what seems a good price (around £850).

I had been thinking of getting a Canon 400D but the D70 idea got me thinking.

Anyone used a D70 are they good cameras, any pics to show off??

If you're buying into digital now; I would reccommend to get one of the newer cameras, like the 400D or for Nikon the D80 (or resp 40D or D300 if you have more money). depends a bit on what you want: 850 pound should buy you a lot more then just the body.

D70's have something special in theire ability to synch strobes at 1/500

I used a D70 underwater in an Ikelite housing for 3 years. It's an excellent camera. It does depend on what lenses and ports you're getting with it, if any. Macro is a good place to start and a macro lens is going to set you back at least £250. If you already have suitable Canon lenses it may be cheaper overall to stick with canon kit.

£850 for the used D70/housing, £1400 or so for an equivalent (But brand new) Canon 400D or Nikon D40, £200 or so more for a Nikon D80 or Canon 40D, another £500 on top for a Nikon D300, a few quid more for a full frame Canon 5D - and so it goes on.....

Bottom line, the D70 was/is a cracking camera, and probably all the camera any of us need (As opposed to want/would like), and if I had one I wouldn't be upgrading just yet, the D80 isn't sufficiently 'better', but I would probably be thinking in terms of upgrading in the not too distant future - D90?.

I had to calculate it into Euro's. (1125), but it is a pretty good deal for any housing and camera. My housing cost me 1000 euro (750) also 2nd hand. As the years progress, you will get less and less for your kit back. I'm still quite happy with my camera, I bought it at 1050 Euro's 2 years ago, and now it's resale value (but also that of replacements etc) is around 3-400 (already superseded with 2 others.....I didnt think the 30d was any better when I bought mine, but the 40d is.....

taking the deal is also going to need investing in lenses etc; it just depends on how big your canon collection is. If it is 2-3 100 pound lenses, I would just ebay them. If you already have nice canon macro's or wide angles, it's a different story....

I still use a D70 as do several others that I know. The reason that I haven't upgraded is that the D70 does everything that I need. It will produce good quality prints to A3. The only thing that I think it lacks is a greater number of selectable focus points. It only has 5 which is few compared to the newer models. That said, the D40s, if I remember correctly, do not have even that.

I will also say that you can get a d70 and housing for well under £800. I think Alan James was selling one at that price but on ebay the cameras can go for as little as £150-£200 and the housings £350-£450. The ports are harder to come by.

I took the plunge today and bought myself a canon 400D i have a few canon lenses that i can use,

I also figured that the D70 is a few years old now so I would get little back if icame to upgrade.

Neat - congrats - my other half has a 400D, and there are some nice features that would make it easier to use underwater than my 350D. Hope you enjoy using it.

Well done on your purchase, I used a canon 400D to take a couple of images over christmas period and seemed a nice camera.

Any idea, on housing direction your going to take?
simon.
