    power packs for charging strobes

Hopefully I shall be doing a fair bit of shore diving up in Scotland this year and will be wild camping quite a lot with the odd recourse to a proper site for a shower every now and then. I need to be able to charge my strobe, can I use one of these (its an ikeltie 125)Halfords Power Pack 200 from Halfords Price £89.99

hope its going to be a sunny summer as I'm going to rely on solar power for charging up the rest of my batteries!

    Jane,
    Should work, but seems costly.

I'm sure you will be able to get a smart charger that will operate off your 12v cigarette lighter. I've just unpgraded my batteries from NiCd to NiMH and bought a smart charger with the batteries. It was about $25. So there must be something a lot cheaper than that.

The problem with using the cig lighter is that you really need the engine running or else only use it for a short while. I managed to flatten the car battery by usin my computer too much one evening running it off the cig lighter So now I only use it for charging things up when I'm on the move.

You'll need to run that thing from Halfords from the 12v. It's just an inverter with a few other things tacked on, it doesn't have it's own power (I think). Your best bet might be to smile sweetly at the campsite and see if they can offer mains. You can buy plugs that go in the caravan plugs that will convert to normal plugs.

I know they have to be charged up from a mains source but thought you could use them to jump start a car and it also says in the blurb

300 watts of portable mains power for TVs, laptop computers etc. anywhere

    Yes, but...

A computer draws a lot more power than strobe batteries...
