Use of strobe??? Help!!!

Hi,
I have a buddy who has just purchased a camera and strobe setup.
I am not knowledgable enough to help him with his questions so wondered if anyone out there could assist??
He has :- Olympus 750 compact camera and an Epoque ES- 230DS strobe.
What he is complaining about is all of his pictures seem to be 'Blown out', ie. to much light from the strobe, even on the strobes lowest setting.
The digital camera is set to ISO 80 which is the lowest setting and F5 which also seems to be the cameras highest number.
Surely its not a case of the strobe being too powerful for this camera is it
Any help would be gratfully recieved.

Thankyou in antisipation of your help
Regards

Is the camera selecting a very slow shutter speed, or is it just strobe placement? It is tempting to get the strobe too close to the subject (I'm assuming this is only happening in macro).

The lens should go to F8 which would half the light reaching the sensor. Assuming the mount allows it move the flash further away from the subject as this reduces the light significantly.
