Off-camera flash

I mentioned this site to a few of you after the EMUP meeting. It's dedicated to off-camera flash and different lighting techniques - land-based stuff but I'm sure this site could provide some real inspiration for those that are interested in playing with this technique.

For those that were not at the EMUP meeting, Alex Mustard gave a presentation and part of it covered using slave strobes placed to accentuate a subject. The strobe could be placed some distance away from you and Alex had used them to backlite subjects hiding the strobe behind a crinoid, soft coral etc.

A very interesting subject thinks I.

Anyway, here is the link: Strobist

Any ideas floating around out there?

I recently got a strobe cable for my Nikon SB-600 strobe and have been tormenting the kids this weekend playing with it. I've also done quite a bit with using it wirelessly, but find that the internal strobe (which seems to have to be on) can ruin the effect.

When I bought my second Ikelite DS-125 it can with the EV controller. I've been meaning to play around with it off camera and was planning to do so for one dive during the Splash-in. Now Alex has shown what is possible I'm going to have to play. I was thinking more atmospheric effects coming out of wrecks, but backlit vegetation could be quite interesting (off the top of my head though can't think of any decent targets to play with in Stoney).

I'm off to St Abbs next weekend (weather permitting), so what I'd love to capture is a backlit feeding urchin. If I do manage anything I'l post here, whether it's a sucess or not.

Rob,

I'm not using my strobes for a while - if you want to borrow my Inons then let me know - they can be remotely fired - you'll have find the AA's to power them tho.

I'd like to try the triangular lighting technique - two flashes at 45degrees behind the subject, one back left and the other backright. A front top strobe completes the effect. In fact, I even have two mini tripods - the pocket size ones that should fit the inons as well - Hmmmmm.

Funny we all seem to have, the same idea.
With my setup, the DS50/51 strobe and manual ev controller, can be removed and left off camera.

Have been playing with this around the house, as well as changing the camera settings.

Tim/Rob is it worth posting a bit elsewhere about the LCD brightness being reduced and histograms?
simon.

Yes i was quite taken with this idea . especially as I tend to use a torch. I am going to have a play with putting the torch behind the subject and play around a bit. Maybe people should post their results.

Yep, working on this one for some deep wreck stuff. Similar to the shots in caves where a strobe is mounted on the twinset pointing backwards at the cave wall.

I want to do the same thing with wrecks where there isn't much ambient light to light the mid-ground behind the diver.

I am getting someone to make a remote trigger sensor for me and then I will have a play with 1 x DS125 and SS200 on the camera with an SS200 on the diver. Going to be very much trial and error until I work out the distances required.

Going to be fun...
