Which Wide Angle Lens!? Tokina, Canon or Sigma?

Hi all,

Just in the process of sorting out an ikelite housing for my EOS 450/500. I've got macro lens sorted, but haven't decided on wide angle lens - so which one should I go for!?

I will want to use this for Topside stuff as well as underwater. So the options seem to be;

Canon 15mm f/e
Canon 10-24mm
Sigma 10-20mm
Tokina 10-17mm f/e

I'm edging towards the Canon 10-24mm as i'll probably get the most use out of it - and i've seen it available new for around £450. Anyone got any thoughts or can convince me i should be going for one of the others!?

Cheers!

J.

Justin,
The Tokina is great underwater, but quite limited top side. If the Canon you want is rectilinear you'll probably find that the 17 end of the Tokina is similar in angle of view as the 10 end of the Canon.
HTH,
Rob

Canon 10-22 is a great lens. I use this and prefer it to the Fisheye so far.

I bought a Nikon 12-24 for use topside and underwater. It's a great lens topside but since I bought the Tokina 10-17 I've not used the Nikon underwater. It's a tough choice because the best lens for use underwater is almost certainly the Tokina or Canon fisheye but the 10-24 is probably the best lens for surface use so whichever you go for you're making a compromise in one environment.

Fair play Alex - i'm not sure whether looking at your shots has inspired me to go out and get the canon lens and see what i can do with it.... Or... Pack all my stuff up and not bother... Some of those images you have are stunning - after diving for 5 years i've not seen images like that with my own eyes - let alone when i've had the camera in the water with me! Stunning!
